The Test of Wills is a non-violent ritual challenge used by the Deep Dwarves of Clan Flamebullion.

Contents

Origins

The Test of Wills was developed as a means to resolve conflicts within the clan without the loss of life. Before the Test of Wills was developed, there was often a lack of males in the clan due to warfare and constant in-fighting for rank and position. Since the creation of the Test of Wills, the incidence of widows, lesbians, and widow lesbians has decreased.

The Test in Action

Dwarf A challenges Dwarf B to a Test of Wills. Dwarf A seats himself opposite Dwarf B. Each dwarf gazes into the other dwarf's eyes. Blinking is allowed but looking away is not. The test ends when someone breaks the gaze for any reason.

Other Notes of Interest

If a grudge is particularly deep and is to be sorted out by a Test of Wills, participants are often loaned a Ring of Sustenance one week prior to the event. Grudges that are not particularly deep are sometimes decided by who needs to sleep, eat, drink, or engage in proper waste disposal first. A resolute dwarf will often foul himself before breaking his gaze to dispose of waste properly. Rumors abound that the current head of Clan Flamebullion sometimes wears a Ring of Sustenance on a toe whenever he senses he may be the target of a Test of Wills.
